Mid-March Update 2011

Grades are going out with this note that includes some of my favorite book recommendations. Thought I’d add it to the blog as well!

Little Ones:
Trucktown Garage Tales by Jon Scieszka, David Shannon, Loren Long, and David Gordon
Treasury of cute easy to read short truck stories. This whole series is quite entertaining.

Sandra Boynton’s Amazing Cows by Sandra Boynton
Enter the world of cows with poems, jokes, and stories galore!

Shark vs. Train by Chris Barton, illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld
Hilarious feud between a shark and a train.

Picture Books:
Bats at the Ballgame by Brian Lies
I never tire of seeing what Brian Lies creates in his bat world, third book in this series. All are terrific!

How Rocket Learned to Read by Tad Hills
Touching book with adorable story of a bird teaching a dog to read.

Scaredy Squirrel has a Birthday Party by Melanie Watt
Scaredy prepares for a birthday party, but you can’t always predict what will happen!

A Sick Day for Amos McGee by Philip C. Stead
Terrific book for any child who loves the zoo and animals. Touching friendship message and the new Caldecott winner for 2011.

Early Chapter Books:
The Adventures of Ook and Gluk- Kung-Fu Cavemen form the Future by Dav Pilkey
Continuing on the line of Captain Underpants, this new book is quite popular and entertaining!

Bad Kitty vs. Uncle Murray – The Uproar at the Front Door by Nick Bruel
Always hilarious and entertaining. Quite approachable and entertaining for reluctant readers. New book coming out in June: Bad Kitty meets THE BABY.

Bink and Gollie by Kate diCamillo and Alison McGhee
This will be a popular new favorite book among 1st and 2nd grade students. Humorous, touching book about two very different friends and their adventures together.

Fiction Books: (Also, these are some of the OBOB 2011-2012 3rd-5th grade titles)
Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix
Story set in the future in a world where families are limited to having only two children with the main character being a third child.

11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass
Terrific friendship book with a little fantasy twist that keeps you turning the pages!

Dying to Meet You by Kate Klise
Entertaining characters, pictures, and varying writing formats make this book series quite appealing to readers.

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin
Newbery Honor- 2010, brilliant adventure story with folktales intertwined.

Non-Fiction:
Ballet for Martha- Making Appalachian Spring by Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jordan
Great celebration of music and composition.

Journey into the Deep: Discovering New Ocean Creatures by Rebecca L. Johnson
Interesting creatures caught in excellent photos.

Kakapo Rescue – Saving the World’s Strangest Parrot by Sy Montgomery
Fascinating look how scientists are working hard to rescue and increase the population of the Kakapo parrot.

The Day-Glo Brothers by Chris Barton
Terrific biography about brothers who invented day-glo paint.
